Traditional methods of contolling wave energy normally consider some form of armouring system along the shoreline between the breaking waves and adjacent property. This method can be very intrusive and in some case unsightly in an area which has a high amenity value to the community.

Nature has shown that by constructing offshore reefs, erosion of the shoreline can be kept to a minimum. Coastal engineers have now recognised the benefits of this approach and by working with Maccaferri have designed offshore reefs using large geotextile containers filled with sand to form offshore reef structures. These structures not only help dissapate wave energy away from the shore but also has ecological benefits due to the open nature of the geotextile used that provides an effective substrate for plant colonisation.
