Maccaferri offers a range of products used in the upgrade or maintenance of existing rail track as well as in construction of new lines. Controlling the geometry of the railway ballast can be achieved through the use of geotextiles for separation, geogrids for stabilisation and a robust drainage system to control moisture levels.

Ballast Integrity
The high dynamic loads and angular nature of sub-ballast and ballast fill call for the use of a robust geotextile able to maintain its integrity through the life of the track. Bidim geotextiles have a long history of use to separate expensive imported ballast from finer grained foundation soils and thereby prevent contamination and weakening of the track ballast.

Stabilisation
Both the ballast layer and the under ballast bearing layer benefit from Tensar geogrid stabilisation, particularly over weak sub-grades. A Tensar biaxial geogrid reinforced ballast layer laterally confines the ballast and prolongs the effective support of the sleepers and rails.

Drainage
The bearing capacity of the foundation material below the ballast is affected by excess moisture. Megaflo panel drains are manufactured from HDPE and have a profile that offers a higher resistance to deformation and loss in discharge capacity required for use under rail track.
